Upcycled T-shirt Burp Rags

I am pretty sure that having a baby can break the bank, but I also know that you don't have to let this happen. I made some upcycled t-shirt burp rags for Miss E, and I liked how well they turned out.

What I liked about them was they were free to me! They also are thin so they didn't stay soaked forever. They are also absorbent.

Supplies

Old t-shirt
Thread
Sewing machine or needle if you do these by hand.

Instructions

Cut out your t-shirt. I don't want to give you an exact size because the size will depend on your shirt. If you see in my picture, you can get an idea of where I cut. Cut through both layers.

Here is another shirt that I decided to do a little different due to the design.

Pin together and sew. I didn't worry about trying to put mine right sides together to flip. I just sewed around all four sides. I used 1/2 seam allowance, but you can vary the seam allowance.

You could choose to do this by hand if you don't have a sewing machine.

You are done! Pretty simple right. Here are the two burp rags all ready for some spit up action!

I would love if you would pin this project!

DIY Cloth Diaper Pail Liner Tutorial

When we decided to cloth diaper, I knew there were other supplies that we would need. A diaper pail liner was one of them. I wanted to try my hand at making one on my own.

My conclusion. Not too hard to make. Just 3 straight lines to sew. Sounds easy right? And if you use a coupon, way cheaper than pail liners you can buy.

Supplies

26 inches of PUL fabric (I found mine in the baby/ diaper section at Joann Fabrics)
36 inches of 1/4" elastic

Cost

Fabric: 5.94 (It is 14.99 regular price, so make sure you use a coupon!)
Elastic: I had this on hand, but would not be much.

Directions

1. Lay your fabric out flat with right sides together.

2. Pin down the long sides. Be careful to keep your pin holes near the outside. If you have a pin hole in the inside, it may leak. So, try to keep the pin as close to the edge as you can.

3. Sew down the sides with 1/2 inch seam allowance.

4. Measure your elastic to cut. I put mine around the outside of my pail liner to make sure that the elastic fit well. I then pinned the elastic and cut. My trash can is 12.3 gallon and I used 36 inches.

5. I then sewed where the elastic overlapped. I like to sew over this several times to make sure that it holds well.

6. Pin elastic to the top on the wrong side. I folded the elastic in half and put the folds on the seems of my bag. Pin so the elastic stays in place. The elastic will be smaller.

7. I then folded the sides in half. I pinned together the fabric and the elastic on the halfway point. The bag looks kinda messy at this point.

8. Start to sew close to the edge. See how the fabric isn't flat? Go to the next step.

9. Pull the elastic so that it is the same length as the fabric. Keep sewing. I did this for each of my sections that are a quarter of the liner.

When you are done, the top of the bag will bunch and fit nice and snug on the top of your diaper pail.

Don't want to make a pail liner? The Planet Wise Reusable Diaper Pail Liner works just as well!

Bath Time Gender Neutral Baby Shower Gift Idea

Since we have not found out what we are having, I know people have had a harder time buying baby shower gifts.

One of my friends was disappointed that we weren't finding out what we were having because she didn't know whether to shop for camo or for hello kitty.

The gift that she ended up giving us was super cute and creative. And way practical, which is also a plus!

Inside the basket were all these things. All things to be used in and around bath time. She also gave us a bath time book.

Here is the side of the basket to see a little more how the basket was assembled. She put the towel down first, rolled the washcloths, and stuck the rest of the goodies inside.

Make sure you pin this for later for when you have stubborn friends like me that don't tell you what you are having. Even if you do know, I still think this is a super cute idea!

Esther's Birth Story

I had someone ask me if I was going to share Esther's birth story. I also want to be able to remember the details around Esther's birth, so I have to write them down or I will forget! Here they are.

I had been for a week or two been wondering when our little one would come. I knew I was dilated and baby had dropped, so I was in suspense. At my last two appointments, the midwife was surprised I hadn't delivered.

On the day before my due date, I woke up at 2:30 and went to the bathroom. I came back to bed and it felt like I peed myself. I figured baby was just kicking since it was just a little squirt. This same thing happened a few times so I went back to the bathroom to try to empty my bladder. I changed, and climbed back into bed. The same thing started happening again.

I got back up and got my phone. I went to sit on the toilet and was looking online about if water breaking could be little gushes or if it was always a gush. I heard so much about people thinking their water broke when it really didn't.

I wasn't really sure what was going on with me. I didn't really believe it was my water. I started getting a little bloody show and this made me a little more worried. About 3:30, I climbed into bed and touched my husband. Thankfully, he woke up since he is a deep sleeper. I explained what was going on to him.

Because nothing was happening, I didn't really want to go to the hospital. My husband had these fears about delivering the baby at home and I think he thought the little one was coming. We decided to get ready and head to the hospital just in case.

Before we left, I ate a small bowl of oatmeal, but my body was nervous about the fact that this might actually be the beginning of delivery.

We made it to the hospital and my husband called off work for the day. I still was feeling great. We got upstairs to labor and delivery and they hooked me up to a monitor and checked to see if my water had broke. The test showed that in fact it had. They checked me at this point and I was only 2.5 cm dilated. I had only gained a half a centimeter in the last week.

We sat in the hospital room. I was having contractions, but not any more than I had had over the last 2 weeks. They allowed me to eat some jello and drink some apple juice.

About 6, the midwife came in and suggested that they start me on a low dose of pitocin. I really did not want this to happen and tried to convince them not to give it to me. They said my body was not doing anything and they needed to get labor going.

They got me hooked up and contractions started hitting me almost immediately. I asked about being able to get up and go to the bathroom. They said I needed unhooked but that my husband could do that. He did unhook me straight from the iv pump. The nurse was so confused. My husband told her that they didn't have movable iv towers in the er. She told him the next time to unplug me from the wall.

I wanted to try to go all natural, and the contractions were getting strong. I had heard that when you get to the point that you don't think you can do it any more that it is almost over. I thought I was to that point. The nurse came in and decided to check me about 11, and I was only to 3.5 cm. I thought man I have a long ways to go and I already think I am dying.

She recommended the epidural. I was still dragging my feet, but I wasn't sure that I could go on like this for several more hours. I finally agreed to the epidural and they hit me up with nubain until they could get all the fluids in me. I was knocked out and loopy at that point. I would sleep until I had another contraction.

The epidural was put in and explained that I would feel pressure but not pain. The pain did leave after about three contractions.

I am not sure what time, but it didn't seem too long and I hit 10 cm. Maybe a few hours. Time wasn't dragging at this point.

I thought I was feeling some pressure to push. The nurse checked and head had really moved, but not ready for me to push yet. I stayed at this point and lost any desire to push.

Eventually when the midwife was done in the office, she came over to the hospital around 6. She came in and said we are going to have this baby. I still had no desire to push.

They got everything ready and had me start pushing. I was really having a hard time because I couldn't figure out where I was pushing. They assured me I was pushing right, but I had no feeling. My right leg was completely numb.

We were talking about this baby being stubborn. My husband, the nurse, and I all thought boy. The midwife thought girl The midwife said she never looks to see what gender the baby is.

After 45 minutes, baby finally made their appearance. The midwife stuck the baby on my chest. Eventually she said, dad, what did you have? He looked and said it was a girl. We were a little shocked.

Our first family photo.
The next little bit seemed like a blur. They cleaned up Esther, made sure she was doing ok, all those normal after birth things.

Esther weighed 7 pounds 6 ounces, was 19.5 inches long, ans was born at 6:47 pm.

They brought me in chicken noodle soup to let me eat and apple juice to drink. I was glad to get something in my belly.

After a little while, the nurse started getting concerned about how much I was bleeding and clotting. They hooked the pitocin back up, and I got to stay on that for the next 24 hours. They were trying to induce cramping to try to get the clotting to stop.

Daddy got to give me my first bath.
Unfortunately, this did not help so they gave me this series of medication that they kept giving me for the next day to help with cramping. This medication did not do enough either. They started pushing on my uterus to get it to shrink. Talk about painful and gross. My husband told me later how big some of the clots were. Glad I wasn't not aware of that at this time.

We decided as it was about 9 or so at this point that we should start having family come back to see Esther so that they could go home. They started coming back in twos since that was all that was allowed back in the room at the time.

My bleeding still wasn't controlled, so they hit me up with a shot of this strong medication. This med made me super nauseous. Up came that chicken noodle soup that I had.

Around 11, they finally let us leave labor and delivery. We got in our room and semi settled. They came in every hour that night to push on my uterus and check the bleeding. Not fun!

We settled in to being a family of three. Labor didn't go as I envisioned, but at the end of the day we were very thankful to have a healthy little girl.

Esther 3 Weeks

We are just trying to keep things real this week. Esther was crying for the pictures, but I didn't feel like trying to come back to them later. Yes, she has quite the set of lungs and likes to hold her breath when crying!

Weight: You are up to 9 pounds! Daddy and I were just talking tonight how you look so much older. We think that you even look older today than yesterday.

Sleep: You are going through a growth spurt and want to eat lots. Mommy is ok with waking up with you as long as you are eating! One night earlier in the week, you did sleep a whole 5 hours. Mommy was shocked.
Social: There hasn't been anyone yet that you won't let them hold you. You have gotten to be several people's first baby that they have held.
Diet: Breast milk.
Likes: You like the outside. You also really like your monkey chair that your aunt got you.
Dislikes: You did not like daddy going back to work. You didn't like being at a different house. Those two things together made an unhappy girl.
Firsts & Milestones
You are following voices and movement a little more.
You are starting to be awake a little more during the day.

2 More Weeks to Go Bump Update!

How far along? 38 Weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 26 pounds- this hasn't really fluctuated the last few weeks...

Sleep: Not too bad. I did have a few nights that weren't the most restful. I have been enjoying my naps this week!

Best moment this week: Enjoying the time that I have left with just me and my husband!

Miss Anything? Last night, I really wanted to roll onto my belly in the middle of the night. I had to think, soon!

Movement: Baby spent a day doing nothing but move!

Symptoms: Oh the heartburn. I don't know how some of you deal with heartburn all the time.

Food cravings: None

Wedding rings on or off? on

Looking forward to: Having a few pictures taken with my husband tomorrow!

Appointments: We went on Tuesday. They always ask if I have been having contractions. I always respond something like not that I know, but I don't really know. Well, my midwife went to measure my belly and she was like you are having a contraction right now. I just gave her this funny look like are you kidding me! That one stopped and another smaller one came on shortly after. She said they were practice contractions. For the next day, my belly was having some major spasms. I guess I need lots of practice! I was beginning to wonder if something was going to happen. After about a day and a half, my belly calmed down. How crazy!

I am now 1 cm dilated and was informed that my doctor and midwife are on call this weekend, so if I want to have my baby on a weekend this is the weekend to have the little one. This comment was the first time it hit me that truly this baby could come at any time! Pretty sure I am not ready!!

37 Week Pregnancy Update and a Little Peek At Our Little One

If you remember last week, I was freaking out about thinking that baby was breech and not moving. I really did not want to have to face a c-section. Thank you all for all of the encouragement that you sent over the last week. I had some friends who knew I had an ultrasound today, and they were texting me to see how things went. So encouraging.

I learned this week that worrying is not worth while. I have been freaking out that baby is breech, and I know don't think that baby has been at all. Nothing moved, and when we went in for the ultrasound today, the first thing the tech said is, "Head is down." Ok, I am done! I don't need to know anything else.

Everything looked great. They thought that baby is around 6 pounds.

All I have to say is that God had some lessons to teach me and He has His ways of teaching me to trust in him and not myself.

How far along? 37 Weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 26 pounds

Sleep: Been pretty good. I definitely haven't been sleepy very heavy. Guess my body is getting ready for a crying little one.

Best moment this week: Hearing, "Head is down."

Miss Anything? Being able to find a comfortable position for more than a few minutes.

Movement: Those legs really get me sometimes!

Symptoms: Always needing to go to the bathroom.

Food cravings: No, but have to eat some things sometimes just because I am pregnant.

Wedding rings on or off? on

Looking forward to: Knowing that as long as everything goes well, this baby will be able to be born vaginally. Just takes a load off of my shoulders. I need to mentally prepare now.

Appointments: Everything looks great. Dilated just about a cm. Got a little ways to go! I got to meet the other midwife today.

Ergobaby Original Collection Baby Carrier Deal

Early on in my pregnancy, I was emailing my cousin about things that she thought were essential for a baby. The Ergobaby Original Collection Baby Carrier was one thing that she highly recommended. My husband got excited about this carrier, and we registered for the carrier. But who wants to spend $114 for a shower gift? I know I don't.

I saw this deal online today and new that is was a great deal. You can get the carrier for $67 shipped after receiving a free $25 gift card. Make sure you find this link that says add both to cart. Also enter the code ERGOBABY25 at checkout.

34 Week Bump Update

I have to admit that I am loving all the green that is around me. Even looking at last week's picture, things aren't this green.

How far along? 34 Weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 25 pounds

Sleep: Can't complain.

I had a dream this week that I had the baby. I did dream about what the baby is going to be. Any guesses? And they were born with light eyes. They handed me the baby right after the little one was born and there was no cheese on the baby. Yep, pretty sure that is not accurate!

Best moment this week: Putting the clothes away that I have and getting diapers ready. Won't be long and I will actually be using those things. Overwhelming.

Miss Anything? Just being able to relish in pregnancy. It has really hit me this week that baby is truly coming soon. 6 weeks really doesn't sound like long. I am excited about this baby coming, but at the same time, I am very overwhelmed by all that this will bring. And I am sure I haven't even realized all that this baby will bring!

Movement: I get distracted sometimes watching tv cause I have to watch my belly move. I am amazed sometimes at the shapes my belly takes. Completely lopsided. Flat in the middle. Legs are definitely on the left side and the baby is working on those soccer skills.

Symptoms: Had some slight acid reflux. Other than that, have felt great!

Food cravings: Nope

Wedding rings on or off? on

Looking forward to: I have my other shower coming up next week.

Appointments: This week was my off week. Won't be much longer and I won't get off weeks any more.

29 Weeks and Counting

1 cup of pasta
2 servings of fruit
3 glasses of milk
4 slices of bread

Does this list look familiar to anyone? If not, be glad. Look at my appointments at the bottom and you can find out.

How far along? 29 Weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 20 pounds

Sleep: Still pretty good. I did get in a good nap this week. Felt so good.

Best moment this week: Getting to spend some time with my husband. Always makes for a good week!

Miss Anything? Energy

Movement: I have to just stop sometimes and be like what in the world in this baby trying to do? Lots of movement.

Symptoms: I feel like I have gone to the bathroom a lot the last few days.

Food cravings: anything that will make my sugar go up. I am suppose to be eating a normal diet. Please tell me how you are suppose to do that when you know you have to take a glucose test?

Wedding rings on or off? on

Looking forward to: eating lunch Saturday after the glucose test.

Appointments: We asked my midwife about the glucose test. She had to go find the paperwork. She came in saying you probably won't be glad that I found the results. Yep, didn't pass.

Now, I get to eat the diet listed at the top for 3 days and then go in for the 3 hour test. 4 blood draws. Any volunteers to go and pretend to be me? Can you tell what the focus of my week has been?

A Dozen Weeks to Go

I went and did my gestational diabetes test this week. I have never felt the intensity of how much sugar messes with your body. I could feel the sugar rushing through my body. After about 40 minutes of waiting, I felt like I could fall asleep. Talk about a crash!

Baby went crazy. Constant movement for about 10 minutes while I was sitting there.

Does anyone want to say that sugar doesn't affect our bodies at all?

How far along? 28 Weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 20 pounds

Sleep: I have slept great. Never enough, but I could always say that. Not a new pregnancy thing.

Best moment this week:

Miss Anything? Energy

Movement: I feel like this little one is trying to get out sometimes. I can't imagine how much more I am going to feel in the next 12 weeks. Thankfully, the movement is not keeping me awake.

Symptoms: A teen guy at church told me Sunday that I was getting the pregnancy walk. Oh the joys of getting to work with teen guys.

Food cravings: Chocolate. I need to get rid of the chocolate from our house

Wedding rings on or off? on

Looking forward to: Finding out the results of my diabetes testing

Appointments: I go back on Tuesday. This last week was my break week.

27 Week Bump Update

Today was beautiful! Windy, but oh so nice. We were trying to get a decent picture. Part way through, my husband looked at me and said, the wind has slowed down, let's hurry. Still my hair looks crazy, but this was one of the best!

If our little one was born this week, the baby would have an 85% chance of surviving. Wow!

The baby also is able to start telling voices apart. One of my friends keeps telling me that I need to read my baby a book. I should probably get on that one of these days.

How far along? 27 Weeks, 13 more weeks to go!

Total weight gain/loss: 18 pounds

Sleep: Our dog Scarlet has been sleeping through the night this week which has been a blessing. Needless to say, sleep has been pretty good!

Best moment this week: Getting to sleep in on Tuesday with my husband. However, he decided not to sleep in for very long, so then I felt kinda lazy.

Miss Anything? I roll a lot in my sleep. Knowing that I can't sleep on my stomach and that I shouldn't sleep on my back has been so hard. I just want to sleep wherever I land.

Movement: Oh my yes. I have been feeling movement on both sides of my belly at the same time. Baby is stubborn though and won't move for their aunt. One of these days.

Symptoms: Just feeling fat :)

Food cravings: My dad always has Frito's at his house. I don't buy them cause I would always eat them all. Well, my dad has been missing a lot recently. He asked me the other day if I ate his whole bag or if I just put them in the cupboard. I think I might owe him some Frito's!

Wedding rings on or off? on

Looking forward to: Getting to finally celebrate my birthday with my family!

Appointments: This week was my last four week appointment. Boring! I guess that is good though! I now get to start going every two weeks. I also need to go do my glucose test next week. My midwife told me about a lady who ate a whole box of doughnuts right before her test. Wow! Talk about setting yourself up for failure!
