Magdalene's Birth Story

Sometimes I share things on here as a way for me to remember them. Maggie's birth story is something that I want to remember. So, here it goes.

At 37 weeks, I went in to the OB and saw the midwife. She told me that I was 3-4 cm dilated and basically could have the baby any day. So, I got myself prepared for that potential. I had been having contractions for a while and they continued, but the contractions weren't painful or regular.

I texted a friend to tell her congratulations that she was pregnant, and she told me she was 3 cm dilated for the last 3 weeks of one of her pregnancies. I started to realize that I might not go into labor any day, and started to fear that I would go past my due date.

My 38 week checkup, that midwife said I was only 2-3 cm. Still no contractions that led me to believe that anything was going to happen, but was still having them. They just always led me to wonder when.

Three days before I was due, I woke up in the middle of the night having contractions about 20 minutes apart. Many people told me that labor with my second would be faster than my first, and I wanted to make sure that Esther was taken care of just in case. My parents came over and waited. I squatted and walked some. I eventually went and tried to take a nap, during that time, my contractions stopped. Frustrating. Scott took the day off work just in case and both my parents ended up going to work after a very non restful night of sleep.

Nothing happened that day that led me to believe that delivery was imminent. Talk about frustrating.

The next night, I woke up at about 1:30 with more contractions. What is up with the middle of the night contractions? Thankfully, I was able to make myself go back to sleep. The next day, I kept having contractions about 20 minutes apart, and these were a little painful, not horrible. The contractions continued all morning, but didn't progress. My mom came out and took Esther, and Scott and I went to walk laps around the yard. 68 degrees in December in Ohio? Made nice lap walking weather. My contractions would come about every 5 minutes out walking, then we would come inside sit down and they would slow down to about 20 minutes. About 3, I was just ready to have this baby and Scott was focused on the fact that some contractions were about 5 minutes apart, and he convinced me to go to the hospital. We stopped at Arby's to get food on the way. Probably a good sign I wasn't ready to deliver!

When we got to the hospital, contractions really slowed down, but I had progressed to 5 cm. I was a little discouraged because I knew I had a while to go yet, and I just wanted this baby to be here. I was tired of waiting! They said they would keep me because I had progressed and they thought this was the real deal.

They asked if I wanted an epidural. I told them that I really didn't but would sign the paperwork just in case. The anesthesiologist that came in was who I had for Esther and I really liked him. I had said if he walked through the door, I would be more likely to get an epidural.

The doctor who was on call came in to check on me. He decided to break  my water in order to get things moving. I was a little nervous about having my water broken since my water broke with Esther and I didn't go into labor for a while. Shortly after the doctor broke my water (I was surprised how much water there is in there), I started getting more intense contractions. This felt promising. The doctor told me he wouldn't predict when the baby would come by, but that I would have one by midnight. It was currently around 5pm and I thought that was a long ways away. I just wanted the process to be over.

I look unimpressed by this goopy baby...

The nurse got me a birthing ball to sit on and I held on to the chair in front of me through contractions. Scott was right there beside me and as contractions went on he would put a cold washcloth on my head with each contraction. I was so glad to have him by my side. I don't know how women do it whose husbands are not with them for delivery.

I remember thinking that I had a pretty intense contraction right before the nurse came in to tell me she was leaving, so right before 7pm. I remember thinking that I wasn't sure I could do this much longer, especially til midnight. She told me that she would have the nurse who was coming to relieve her come check me so that she knew how far along I was.

About 7:15, the nurse still hadn't been in. I told Scott that I was starting to feel some pressure, but I didn't really know what I should be feeling since I had an epidural with Esther and couldn't feel anything. Scott went out to get the nurse. She came in and told me to get in the bed to check me. My contractions were pretty close at this point and I wasn't sure I would be able to make it into bed.

One proud daddy

She checked me at this point and said I was around 8-9 cm. She went out to call the doctor. I was still thinking that I still had a little to go before I would have this little one and I didn't know I could do it.

They put the foot of the bed down so that I could just sit in bed, but then it took away my chair to hold on to. I grabbed Scott's hand. He told me later that I was twisting his hand. Gotta get him in on the pain!

The meeting of the sisters

Shortly after, the nurse told me that I could practice pushing until the doctor came in. I really had no concept of pushing since I hadn't felt anything with Esther. She told me that I was only pushing through my face. Second time, I had more of an idea of what I was doing. I think I pushed 4 times before baby came out. My second to last time I pushed, they thought that baby might come out. She didn't and I remember feeling like this huge thing was stuck inside and it hurt. I looked up at the doctor and asked him if this was the ring of fire. He said it was and then I finally got to push again. Seemed like those two contractions were super far apart. Of all contractions! Once baby was out, the doctor was laughing about the fact that I nonchalantly asked if that was the ring of fire.

39 weeks

We have now reached 39 weeks. Phew!

Went to the OB yesterday. I just feel like a ticking time bomb ready to go off. They did strip my membranes yesterday, but so far that has accomplished nothing.

I have had this gut feeling that I am going to go over my due date. My midwife assured me that I will not make it to 41 weeks. Just a waiting game!!

38 weeks

I went to the OB this week and saw the other midwife in the practice. She said that she is more stingy in her saying how far dilated I am. She said that she would only give me 2-3cm. I feel like I am regressing in my pregnancy!

I have been trying to take everyday as it comes. Baby may not come today, but I still need to be prepared for when they come. Easier said than done. Still feeling well, thankfully.

This little girl and I have loved spending time together. Man am I going to miss her when I am in the hospital. Is that one reason to have baby at home?

37 Weeks...Officially Full Term

It seems like just yesterday that I found out we were expecting this bundle of joy.

Went to the OB on Monday of this week and found out that I had gone from 1-2 cm dilated to 3-4 cm dilated in the last week. I also am 70% effaced. My midwife said that that was a lot of progress for one week. She basically said that I could go into labor anytime. She also said that I could walk around for a few weeks like that. I knew that I was hours into labor with Esther before I reached that point in labor. Goodness!

Needless to say, on Tuesday, I was way apprehensive about going into labor. I felt a little sick all day just knowing that labor could be anytime. Our pastor that night at church shared the verse Philippians 4:7 which says, "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus." That verse really challenged me that I am not in control, but He is.

The next day, I texted a friend to congratulate her on her pregnancy. She was telling me that she was 3 cm for the last 3 weeks of her pregnancy. I needed to hear that personal experience story. So, sometime before Christmas, there will be another addition to our family. Until then, I will do my best to rely on the peace that God has given me.

30 Weeks With Both Pregnancies

Last post, one of my friends said that she wanted to see a comparison shot of both pregnancies. So, I have uploaded me at 30 weeks with both pregnancies. Unfortunately, with Esther, I was wearing a bulky sweatshirt!

I went to the ob at 29 weeks and hear rate was 133. I have never had one that slow. Thinking that I should have gotten out of bed earlier and drank some more coffee before my appointment!

First picture is this pregnancy. Second is from my pregnancy with Esther.

And just because she is cute! Sometimes I look at her and think did this cute thing really develop inside of me? Can we deny that there is a God?

26 and 28 weeks

Baby has been a little active thing. Get to go back this week to see how the little one is doing. I can hardly believe that we are down to just 12 weeks til baby comes. Where has time gone?

Have been trying to spend some quality time with Miss Esther. I read somewhere that if you can make it a habit now, you are more likely to stick with the quality time after baby comes. Trying to make her know she is important!

24 weeks

Man, I just looked back at 23 weeks and my clothes drastically changed. Does that make you curious at all? I am amazed when you live in Ohio how much different the weather can be in a week or a days time. God keeps us guessing and our wardrobe changing!

I have honestly been feeling great. I think that I could go for a nap every day, though.

Recently, I have been thinking about how I feel like I was just finding out that I was pregnant. Now, I am past way there. A little one will be here before we know it. I have a lot I would like to do before then! God will give grace, and I can't take a nap every stinkin' day!

23 Weeks and Counting

It has been 3 weeks since I posted an update. I am already at 23 weeks. Can someone make time slow down?

A little girl distracted me for this picture. She has no idea that her world is going to be rocked!

Half Way There

Can you tell that life has changed from this pregnancy to last? I have taken pictures all along and have posted not a single one!

Things have been going well with this pregnancy, my only complaint is that I have been really tired. Part of that is just life though? I have a teething girl right now that has been keeping me up at night and that hasn't been helping my energy level.

I hope this pregnancy slows done. I can't believe that we are halfway to meeting the next little one.

Maternity Photos!

Are you ready for picture overload? We had a friend come over and take pictures for us. I wanted to make sure that I had some pictures of my husband in the mix with my belly. I was 38 weeks at this time. Thank you so much Ashley for taking some awesome pictures for us!

I think this is how we both feel right about now!

39 Weeks!

Anyone else a little disturbed by that vein in my arm?

How far along? 39 Weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 25 pounds

Sleep: The first few nights of this week were kinda rough. I kept thinking that I would wake up in the middle of the night and the baby would be deciding to start making their appearance. Obviously, that did not happen! Last night, I did get a great night's sleep. Didn't even get up to go to the bathroom. Such a blessing.

Best moment this week: My husband needed to take the national registry in order to finish his EMT certification. We were able to go out to eat afterwards. So nice just to be able to get away for a few hours with him! He learned how to deliver a baby in the EMT class, and now is worried that he will have to deliver our baby. :)

Miss Anything? I have already been thinking about not feeling the baby kicks. Been trying to feel them more this week because it won't be long and I won't get to feel them any more.

Movement: I know babies are suppose to feel tight on space, but this little one has still been kicking away. Now to use those legs to help push out here soon!

Symptoms: For a week and a half, I have been having what my midwife calls practice contractions. Apparently baby and I need a lot of practice!

Heartburn has pretty much gone away since baby has dropped!

Food cravings: None

Wedding rings on or off? on

Looking forward to: Holding this little one and finding out the gender!

Appointments: We went to see the midwife on Monday. She really thought that she was going to see us over the weekend. Baby was no ready to come though! I was 2 cm dilated. Baby has dropped.

I woke up Sunday morning feeling kinda junky. As she was telling me different signs of labor, I was experiencing most of them. Lack of appetite, just feeling gross, kinda crampy. But those have eased off and baby still hasn't decided to come! Now I am working on being patient!

2 More Weeks to Go Bump Update!

How far along? 38 Weeks

Total weight gain/loss: 26 pounds- this hasn't really fluctuated the last few weeks...

Sleep: Not too bad. I did have a few nights that weren't the most restful. I have been enjoying my naps this week!

Best moment this week: Enjoying the time that I have left with just me and my husband!

Miss Anything? Last night, I really wanted to roll onto my belly in the middle of the night. I had to think, soon!

Movement: Baby spent a day doing nothing but move!

Symptoms: Oh the heartburn. I don't know how some of you deal with heartburn all the time.

Food cravings: None

Wedding rings on or off? on

Looking forward to: Having a few pictures taken with my husband tomorrow!

Appointments: We went on Tuesday. They always ask if I have been having contractions. I always respond something like not that I know, but I don't really know. Well, my midwife went to measure my belly and she was like you are having a contraction right now. I just gave her this funny look like are you kidding me! That one stopped and another smaller one came on shortly after. She said they were practice contractions. For the next day, my belly was having some major spasms. I guess I need lots of practice! I was beginning to wonder if something was going to happen. After about a day and a half, my belly calmed down. How crazy!

I am now 1 cm dilated and was informed that my doctor and midwife are on call this weekend, so if I want to have my baby on a weekend this is the weekend to have the little one. This comment was the first time it hit me that truly this baby could come at any time! Pretty sure I am not ready!!
