Handmade Christmas Presents Linkup and Scarf Tutorial

Welcome to my first Homemade Christmas Gift Linkup!

I will be posting a linkup every Thursday until Christmas. I want to see what all you are doing for others for Christmas to get some ideas.

Here is a tutorial for a scarf I recently made myself. I had an old t-shirt that my husband had wrapped a present for me. I laid the shirt out flat.

I cut off both the bottom and under the sleeve.

I then cut that piece in half.

I cut down the side seem and then sewed these two sections together.

You are going to divide this section into thirds. I then found a sport on my machine that would help me stay straight. You could add a piece of tape or magnet to your machine to help with this.

Now comes the fun part! I tightened the tension on my machine.

I also adjusted the stitch length to the longest to give me a good basting stitch. These might be different on your machine.

You will know you have this right, when your knit comes out looking like this.

Do the same on the other side.

Once you have the basting stitch done. Return the tension and stitch length to the normal setting and stitch over the basting. Remove the basting and the scarf will gain some length.

Here is my finished scarf. Great way to still wear that old t-shirt that you aren't willing to part with!

The next Thursday I will feature a few of your projects for others to see. You must link back to this post on your project in order to be featured.

  1. I love making gifts at christmas - I would link up a post, but I don't have any... but last year we made homemade Vanilla extract, and Vanilla sugar - it was perfect because my not quite 3-year-old helped with all of it. Looking forward to hearing more of your ideas!

  3. That turned out very cute! Thanks for leaving the link to it over at my site! I love projects that repurpose something that I already have. I have been making a different sort of ruffled scarf out of old t-shirts lately but this would be fun to try.
